Was looking to get into a crossbow since I can no longer shoot a gun or pull back a bowstring on an normal bow. I wanted to get something that would last and was not complex like a compound crossbow that had to be tuned by professional shops. I went with the Assassin 400TD from Excalibur based on ratings I saw about the company and its service. Received the package including crossbow, soft case, 4 bolts with target points, scope and quiver. It was pretty easy to put together although the manual is limited. Excalibur had some good videos online to help with this. I've never had a bow before but found it to be quite easy to understand, and got the scope mounted and sighted in easily. It is pretty great because with this lighted scope, there are dots that will light up red or green for each 10 yards to the target starting at 20 yards. After a few bolts at 20 yards to tune it in there, I backed up to 30 yards and adjusted the speed dial until I hit the target at 30 and made some minor adjustments to the windage. Got a pretty good group there and then did the same back to 40 and 50 yards (as long a distance as I had in the barn. I did have to switch targets as the bolts were going through the bag target I had and sticking into the plywood wall behind it.Went out the next weekend and checked sighting and made slight adjustments based on shooting my broadhead instead of practice tip and decided good to go. The next morning I went out to hunt. Two times sighting in/practicing and I got a doe at 35 yards with double lung/heart shot. I was amazed. Full passthrough and then buried the broadhead in a 2.5 inch log so deep that the entire broadhead was embedded into it. Processed the doe with some buddies and had a backloin on the plate for the family that night! Truly the definition of field to fork.Overall experience was excellent with good support from Excalibur when emailing them. This is a pretty expensive crossbow, but knowing that you can do the maintenance and string changes yourself, having an integrated crank to cock it, and having something that will last me the rest of my life for hunting, it was certainly worth it. I would recommend it for anyone starting out but can't comment for someone who is already an expert. Maybe after a few more seasons then I can.
